Protect Dance Recital Costumes From Tears and Stains

March 28, 2007 by sachinskg

Dance recital costumes are different to casual costumes in that they are usually restricted to one production. Many costumes can be used over and over again by different characters in different performances over a period of time.

However, dance recital costumes can only be used for a single production, whether you are a lead character or part of the backup dancers. It’s highly likely that you won’t find a dance recital costume anywhere else once a tour or series of performances are finished.

Because of this, it is even more important that you check your dance recital costume thoroughly in the lead-up and just before your performance. Your routines may involve some complicated moves and your costume must be able to take some punishment while providing comfort and freedom of movement for you.

Spend some time checking every stitch, hemline, joint and closure to make sure nothing can snap or tear suddenly in the middle of your performance, which could cause embarrassment to yourself and your dance troupe. You should also look out for stains, which can be a problem and can diminish the impact of your costume.

Remember that dance recital costumes are tailor-made for a particular performance, so you would do well to follow a few rules in order to protect your costume from damage.

§ Your costume must look as good as new for each performance because of the specific role you and your costume play in the production.

§ Take care with any makeup or hair gel that you wear. There is a danger that the cosmetics you use could stain your costume so make sure you protect your dress when applying make up. Only put on your costume once all the make up and under clothes are in place. This will reduce the risk of staining your clothes.

§ After you finish your performance, hang your costume on a padded hanger without crushing it so that it will be in the best possible condition for your next performance.

If you can follow these simple rituals, then you have a greater chance of having your costume last for a longer time without having to spend money on buying replacement clothes.
